The Ebonyi State-owned College of Nursing Sciences in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state, has secured accreditations for OND and HND in Nursing Programmes, by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, gave full accreditation to the college for programmes in Nursing and Midwifery.
The Provost of the College, Mrs. Patricia Nwankwagu, disclosed this at the weekend in Abakaliki, in a meeting held by management of the College and members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Education.
She said the institution has attained a new height under her administration with full accreditation and massive infrastructural expansion.
Mrs. Nwankwagu recalled that the College emerged best at the South East Nurses Olympiad Quiz Competition and second best at the National level in 2025.
She said, “Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is a rare gem that comes once in a generation as he has demonstrated uncommon political will to transform society, which he has demonstrated in Ebonyi State within just three years in office.
"This Institution has enjoyed massive support of his administration and that is why the College has been able to record significant
transformation in infrastructural rebirth and provision of modern health equipment.”
The Provost highlighted recent milestones of the institution under her administration to include; Construction of a storey building Arts Classroom Block, with 400 capacity-Hall, sinking of a motorised borehole for Staff Lodge, ongoing construction of 800-capacity students hostel, and fully functional mini ICT Hall.
Nwankwagu further disclosed that there had been expansion work on sports facilities in the institution, construction of 20,000 litres overhead tanks for hostels; while it also secured second best position at 2026 South East debate competition.
She noted that her administration had repositioned the College to produce highly competent and quality nurses and midwives for the state and the nation, and appealed to the committee to consider an amendment of the law establishing the institution to meet current realities.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Aloysius Nwodo, said the meeting was aimed at assessing the operational level of the College, including its progress and challenges.
He commended the Provost for her administrative ingenuity which, he said, has brought visible development to the College, especially the exceptional cleanliness of the College environment, and its academic discipline.
The Committee chairman noted that considering the central role of good health in engendering development,
Governor Nwifuru’s administration did not rest on its oars until the health sector was reformed to optimum capacity.
He said this has been shown in the recruitment of health personnel and massive infrastructural development in health institutions across the state.
In their separate contributions, members of the committee, Hon. Godwin Abiribe who represents Izzi West, Hon. Victor Nwoke who represents Abakaliki North, Hon. Goodluck Mbam representing Izzi East and Hon. Joseph Ununu, the member for Abakaliki South State Constituency, described the Provost as a competent and experienced technocrat whose wealth of experience has repositioned the College, and assured the institution of continued support of the House Committee.(Anchor Reporters)
