The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a staff of Albarka Radio by police officers during the Sallah celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
In a press release issued on Monday and signed by the Council Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, on behalf of the council chairman Comrade Umar Sa’idu, the union described the incident as barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct attack on press freedom.
The NUJ said the act constitutes a gross violation of human rights and a troubling display of misconduct by officers expected to protect citizens.
The union called on the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that all officers involved are sanctioned.
It also demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command take full responsibility for the victim’s medical expenses.
The council warned that failure to address the situation could compel the union to convene an emergency congress to determine further action.
The NUJ further urged media organisations in the state to remain vigilant, reiterating that it will not tolerate intimidation, harassment or brutality against journalists.(Sahel Reporters)
