In a press statement signed by its President, Alhassan Yahya, the union expressed concern over reports that a journalist was allegedly subjected to hostility after requesting verifiable data to demonstrate the impact of government policies on the lives of Abia residents.

According to the NUJ, it is disturbing that a journalist carrying out his constitutional and professional duty, by seeking measurable evidence of governance outcomes, would face any form of intimidation. The union stressed that in a democratic society, elected officials remain accountable to the people, while the media serves as a vital link between government and the governed.

The statement maintained that asking for data to assess the effectiveness of public policies cannot be construed as provocation or disrespect. Rather, it said, such inquiries form part of the core responsibility of journalism: to seek facts, clarity and transparency, particularly on issues that directly affect public welfare.

The NUJ warned that any attempt to harass or intimidate journalists for demanding accountability undermines democratic values and threatens press freedom. It reminded public office holders that freedom of expression and of the press are enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The union therefore called on Governor Otti to refrain from actions or statements capable of intimidating journalists in the discharge of their duties. It also urged the governor to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability by providing verifiable data when requested, and to publicly reaffirm his administration’s commitment to press freedom and constructive engagement with the media.

Reaffirming its position, the NUJ said it stands firmly with journalists in Abia State and across the country and would continue to defend their rights, safety and professional integrity without fear or favour.

“A free press is not an adversary of government,” the statement concluded. “It is a partner in progress.”(Theleaderng.com)
