As the world marks International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ FCT Council’s Chair Grace Ike has joined millions across the globe in celebrating the strength, resilience, brilliance, and boundless potential of women.

In her message to commemorate this year's IWD, she said: “Today, as the world marks International Women’s Day, I join millions in celebrating women. The 2025 theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ is a powerful reminder that when we intentionally invest in women—through education, mentorship, opportunity, and resources—we are not merely supporting individuals; we are strengthening families, communities, institutions, and nations.

“For me, this year’s celebration carries deep personal meaning. As the first female Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, I stand on the shoulders of courageous women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes, and refused limitations. My journey is proof of what becomes possible when society gives women space to lead, contribute, and excel.

“When women are empowered, newsrooms become more inclusive, storytelling richer, governance more responsive, and societies more just.”

She noted that female journalists across Nigeria are breaking ground, covering difficult beats, shaping discourse, mentoring younger colleagues, and demonstrating that excellence knows no gender.

"Celebration must go beyond recognition—it must translate into action. We must mentor young female journalists, create safe and supportive workplaces, provide leadership opportunities, and ensure women’s voices are heard in decision-making. These investments yield the greatest returns for journalism and for society.”

She welcomed the UN call—“Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls”—as a timely reminder that equality remains a collective responsibility.

“On this day, I celebrate extraordinary women in the NUJ, the FCT media community, and across Nigeria. Your courage and dedication inspire a new generation who see that leadership is possible.

“Let us recommit to giving more opportunities, support, mentorship, and recognition to women. When women rise, journalism rises, our communities thrive, and our nation grows stronger.

“When we give to women, we truly gain as a society.” she concluded.

“Happy International Women’s Day.”(Core Reporter)
